Hi guys,
Recently a client mentioned some great enhancements they would like to see in the next version(s) of Opt In Email and I wanted to get some other customers suggestions and feedback on these.
One is the ability to have a series of email sent out shortly after distribution. This has actually been requested for a while and will make the next release for sure. There is a seperate thread for this enhancement that we will follow up on once its ready.
The other two enhancements I don't think have been brought up or requested before though and I think they would make some great features for the module. Specifically, the ability to insert tags for specific module content to be included within the email/newsletter. Something like $(ModuleID) within and throughout the newsletter would render that 'Live' content within the newsletter. This way, if you sent out a newsletter and the user actually read it two weeks later they are seeing whatever live content exists within that module at the time. There are other advantages to but thats the idea...
Any thoughts or feedback on this? His other suggestion was to also allow for the ability to 'Auto Schedule' these types of content-driven content. This way your newsletter could go out every month on its own and always have fresh content.

Awesome ideas Chad.
I've wanted something like that for a while, that no matter what content is published on a site; it can be pulled through and pushed to end users. This is great for adding extra content to newsletters and can be specific like: grabbing the latest special or product from say SDN store or grabbing the latest forum topics the way Sitepoint.com do for their newsletters.
The idea of having an auto newsletter is awesome as well. Imagine a newsletter that has (I'd use this for my own business) content from a blog, forum and general news I'd publish online.
All we then worry about it the content and your engine powers the rest! |

| At the moment one can send out to subscribers who have opted into a list. What about a way to be able to send newsletter to people of certain DNN Roles. For example there might only be 1 opt in list for a newsletter, but there might be the need to segregate subscribers. eg: Gold, Silver level membership. They are receive the same standard newsletter, but from time to time one needs to send specific relevant information to DNN roles. The only way around this at the moment is to use the Newsletter feature within DNN. But it doesn't have the nice previous newsletter and tracking feature of OPTIN. |

Last idea for the day...
SAVE OPTION
Clients are slow when generating content at the best of times and they could spend ages formatting the layout adding the content. Leave it, come back to it and all this time they do not realize there is session has timed out, or someone closes their browser and for whatever reason, their content is gone and then get on the phone to us and rip us a new a##hole. Anyhoo, an option is possibly Save a Draft.
Different from getting a previous email and changing the content. There could also be multiple users within an organization who are required to add their own content to a newsletter as well.
I'm finding whilst I create templates for clients I am copying the source to a Notepad file. Saving it and copying and pasting this again when we're ready to work on it. |

RSS TRACKING
I think it would be handy for specific users (based on roles) to be able to get an RSS feed of various email campaigns. Useful stats migh show number of emails sent out, number of subscribes, unsubscribes, number of reads etc. without the need to consistently log in and view tracking. |

SETTINGS DASHBOARD
I don't know about anyone else, but I get pretty confused with the number of places that one needs to go to for settings for the various modules within OPTIN. Be nice if there was a Dashboard style page where you can choose the instance of OPTIN and then be presented with all the settings for each of the modules (subscribe section, newsletter section etc).. Just a thought...
Cheers.. |

Hi guys... Thanks for all of these great suggestions. We plan to release a roadmap for the 3.2 release sometime this week. The roadmap should cover some key new features discusses in this thread and others. Any features not implemented for the 3.2 release will still be reviewed for other releases (just don't want to add too much that would push back the release date too far) Thanks again, ill reply here with a link to the post when the roadmap has been posted. Thanks. -Chad |

Easy: Configure the module so that admin or page edit rights are not required in order to carry out all newsletter and list management tasks. All such tasks should be able to be done by a user with only module edit permissions. I see posts going back two years about this and I've brought it up extensively myself here and in tickets. The module editor role should be able to create a mailing list and manage that and all newsletter creation procedures without having to have Admin access. For a start, move the "General Settings" and "Newsletter Template" sections out of the module settings and into the action menu. The portal admin should only have to configure the module permissions and server settings Move all management functions into the respective portal folders - it should not be creating new folders at root level. One point at which this happens is during list import. If that is the only time it happens, and the folder is cleared afterwards then it's not really an issue. But if the files are left in there, then it's a problem. And the biggie: Create a proper newsletter management workflow - drafts, outbox, sent items - approval and so on. Make the archive module configurable for exactly what it shows and how - Put 200 newsletters in it and try and make it useful for the end user trying to find a specific item. Don't remove per module SMTP settings until per portal SMTP settings have been implemented in the DNN core. This has been one of the special features of this module and I've just learned that it is being removed. I'd reconsider until it's in the core, which I understand will be in Cambrian or thereabouts. In addition to the dynamic data that has already been suggested, add the ability to paste in an RSS feed from the portal. This would, for example, allow us to send out the latest posts from a news module or a blog and not have to copy and paste them into a newsletter manually. Put an alert on the delete icons - it's way too easy to delete an entire list with a minor mis-click of the mouse. I haven't checked yet, but is field validation working in Firefox? I didn't used to and if it still doesn't then add that. On the "Manage Lists / Users" page where one can manually add a new subscriber by name and email address, please also provide tick-boxes allowing one to select a mailing list for the new user. As it stands now one has to add the user and then go and edit the user again to add them to a list. Seems like it should just happen in one go. That'll do from me, thanks. Regards, Rob |

a)
Adding the newsletter selection ticks for the manual addition of new users would be a critical time saver.
b)
I am unable to sort the list of subscribers by Email address. This makes it difficult to determine if there are duplicates.
c)
It is critical for me to be able to isolate 1 or more newsletters on a particular archive page. (I need this one yesterday)
d)
Adding conditionals to the parameters list. i.e.
($ HASFIRSTNAME) Dear ($FIRSTNAME), ($/HASFIRSTNAME)
e)
Finally I would like to see a very strong helper module that would work with admin defined templates to allow users to create Newsletters with the absolute minimum HTML coding. Even if this is a separate product it would offload a ton of work for me and I would be very willing to pay for it. |

Suggestions for opt in-------------------------------- A more logical arrangement of the modules could make opt in much more user friendly... Opt in should consist of two front end modules and one back end module: Two front end modules 1. Opt in - Previous Email list. 2. Opt in - Subscription. and one back end module 1. Opt in - Email Management. --------------------------------------------------------- The back end module should be split in three different pages / tabs. 1. Email Messages 2. Email Lists 3. Email Distributions 1. Email Messages Should contain the following List of email messages saved (available for distribution) Creating New email messages. 2. Email List Lists of email lists. Create and edit email lists. Import data to lists. 3.Email Distributions This is where one sets what email message gets sent to what list List with history of previous distributions - with stats.. Example of a very friendly user interface for managing email distributions: http://www.icontact.com/ |

I agree Johann,
But you can sort of do it now by creating all the pages (menu items) in a seperate menu option eg: drop down can be: Opt in, then another bunch of drop downs for all the management pages. Then just go into the various modules, copy the URL's and paste into each page to redirect to that section.
No more hunting for an admin section again, everything where you almost want them to be.
However the interface could be changed a bit.
Cheers,
Dan |

My top wishes after using it 3days... * Save option on emails to be able to go back and continue. * Only module edit rights to carry out all newsletter and list management tasks. |

A Save option would indeed be very cool, I have had several customers asking for this option. I also still think there is an issue with adding the base href in the mail message. I think when you send using the scheduler, it doesn't get added, while if I send directly it does... |

By use the way, when you use the module on different portals, and you use the scheduler, a new scheduler item will be added for each portal. I don't think that that is necessary, and it may even cause problems. Lets's say scheduler 1 runs every 5 minutes, and scheduler 2 does also. let's say scheduler 1 starts sending e-mails at 09:45, and scheduler 2 gets active 1 minutes later. Now the job scheduler 1 is working on isn;t finished yet, so in the DataSprings_OptInEmailScheduledNewsletter table, the IsComplete flag is not set. So scheduler 2 starts sending out the same newsletter. I think I have seen this happenig during some test e-mails I did. So when I checked the scheduler, I removed the double items for opt-in, and everything worked fine again. So, Chad, I guess when adding a schedule item, you should check if there isn't already an active one. |
